Unfortunately, the poor people living in Rio De Janeiro Brazil’s slums, called favelas,lack access to quality education and have no opportunity to learn English, a skill that could help them escape the vicious cycle of poverty.

Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts
You’ll have the opportunity to benefit the lives of impoverished favela communities in Rio by teaching English to classes that range from 5-30 students, both kids and adults. If you’re up for the challenge, you can help develop curriculum and lesson plans to strengthen the program.
Skills and Qualifications
No specific qualifications or teaching credentials are required for this project, though you will need to speak basic Portuguese, and be fluent in English. Native speakers are preferred.
What you really need is a profound desire to help the poor people in need living Brazil’s favelas. Bring your passion, creativity, patience, and dedication to serving others.
Every day, volunteering teaching English program in Brazil will be an exciting adventure that will find you immersed in the culturally rich favelas and dedicated to making the lives of the extraordinary people that live there better.
You’ll be helping in a variety of other areas, as well, and will end up doing a lot of different things while you are in Rio, so expect a variable schedule. Still, you’re probably wondering what a typical day might look like. Here’s a sample schedule to give you an idea.
- First Day: On your first day of teaching English volunteering program in Brazil, our in-country coordinator will take you to your placement, and you’ll meet the dedicated local staff and your eager Brazilian students!
We’ll give you an orientation that covers your service work, schedule, safety, and goes over the customs and culture of Brazil to get you started on the right foot with your volunteer abroad adventure. - Weekdays: A typical volunteer day is as follows:
- 7.00 to 7.30 AM: Have breakfast at your hostel and get ready for an exciting day!
- 7.45 AM: Head out to your placement, and start teaching your students and setting them off on their own adventure with language.
- 12.00 PM: This is a great time to chat with your fellow volunteers and local project staff while having lunch.
- 3.00 PM: The great part about volunteering with Global Crossroad is after you’ve made an amazing difference for about 5 hours a day, you have the afternoon and evening free to explore your amazing destination. Head to the beach or explore Rio!
- 6.45 PM: Rio is a tourist hotspot and has a wide range of international flavors in countless restaurants right that are right on your doorstep! Go out to dinner with your new friends from around the world!
Volunteer Teaching Brazil: Dates and Fees
Dates: Volunteer in Brazil
All volunteer programs in Brazil start every Monday of each month. However, if there is travel constrains, you can start any project on any day.
Volunteer Teaching Brazil Program is not available from 21st February to 1st March, 2020(Carnival) and 19th December, 2020 to 10th January, 2021 (Christmas / New Year) .
Fees: Volunteer in Brazil
Global Crossroad is committed to offering the most affordable and highest quality volunteering programs in Brazil. We strive to keep our costs low. The humanitarian side of the business is our passion.
Global Crossroad's volunteer program in Brazil application and registration fee cost US $299.
In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee. You will pay your weekly fee directly to the country coordinator, who in turn will allocate it to your host family, project and other in-country support we offer to our volunteers. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

How your fee is allocated?
Program fees cover:

Program fees exclude:
- Visas
- Airfare
- Personal expenses on soft drinks and foods
- Daily transportation
- Airport return transfer
The volunteering overseas in Brazil program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the program (usually Monday) to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your program’s last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses.
Accommodation and Meal
While volunteering teaching English in Brazil, you’ll be staying in one of two safe, clean, comfortable hostels in great areas. One is steps away from Copacabana Beach, the other is in the funky, bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa. You’ll get breakfast served at the hostel as part of your volunteer fee.
Free Time and Weekend Exploration
You’ll have plenty of free time, as you have evenings and weekends off from your Brazil teaching English volunteer program. Rio De Janeiro is your playground! Stunning beaches, people watching, outdoor recreation, a sizzling Latin nightlife and more await!
Weekends are the perfect chance to get out and explore the rest of Brazil There are so many amazing places in this vast and varied country, and you should get out and see as many of them as you can while traveling abroad!

Volunteer Teaching Brazil: FAQs
Your heart is full, and you are ready to start making a difference in the lives of the poor and struggling people living in Rio’s favelas. You’re bound to have a few questions before you’re ready to pack your bags, though, we’re here to offer you some important info to give you the answers you need.
Arrival and departure
For our teaching volunteer program in Brazil, you will need to fly into Rio de Janeiro International Airport. We recommend our volunteers schedule their flights to Brazil one day prior to the start date of our volunteer projects.
Global Crossroad’s local representative will be waiting for you at the airport terminal. He/she will greet and then transfer you safely to your accommodations. If you miss a flight or get delayed, don’t worry. Just let our in-country coordinator know, and we’ll make the adjustments for your pick-up.
When you’re done with your work, you’ll need to book a taxi to the airport. Or plan ahead and go on a little adventure before you head back home. You’ll have earned it!
Visa
You’ll need a tourist visa to visit and volunteer in Brazil. There’s not one available at the airport in Rio, though, so you’ll need to plan ahead. You can visit the official embassy or consulate of Brazil in your home country. Depending on your nationality, you can skip the trip and apply for a Brazilian eVisa. Check out this website and do your research based on your home country’s requirements.
Vaccination
Getting vaccinated is the first step towards a safe and successful trip abroad. Meet with your doctor about your trip and get up to date! Some shots need boosters a few weeks later, so plan ahead and go early.
The recommended vaccinations for English teaching volunteer opportunity in Brazil are: meningitis, Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), polio, rabies, pneumonia, measles, mumps and rubella, yellow fever, influenza, chickenpox, typhoid, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and shingles.
