China is a stunning country with one of the most diverse cultures in the world. Dating back thousands of years ago, components of Chinese culture include ceramics,
architecture, music, literature, martial arts, cuisine, visual arts, philosophy and religion. Also known as the land of invention, you will be spoiled for choice with more than 50 famous sites to visit including temples, mountains and beaches.
Despite being a powerful economy, population growth has left giant pandas vulnerable and now, they are endangered. By joining our China panda volunteer project, you will help safeguard the future of these captivating animals. You will play a big role to ensure the center runs smoothly by cleaning, feeding, and caring for the Pandas. At the same time, in the China Panda volunteer you will be able to experience Chinese culture and participate in a host of activities that will truly immerse you in local values and beliefs.
While participating in the China panda volunteer program, your days will be fun and exciting. You will be so many opportunities to learn and share something new every day.
China Panda Volunteer Program Itinerary:
In China, we offer 3 options for Panda Volunteer Program currently.
- 1 week China Panda Volunteer Program
- 2 weeks China Panda Volunteer Program
- 3 weeks China Panda Volunteer Program
Our program will provide you a unique experience by combining Panda volunteering activities with immersive sight-seeing activities. You will be able to learn about Chinese culture and history, visit famous landmarks while working towards Panda Conservation efforts. Volunteers in the China Panda Volunteer program will surely have a memorable and extraordinary experience.
The sample itinerary is as follows:
Week 1
Day 01: On Monday when you arrive, a GCR local coordinator will pick you up from Chengdu Shuangliu Airport and transfer you to our local partner hotel in Chengdu City. You will spend the rest of day familiarizing yourself with the country, safety, health, project rules, and regulations required to participate in China panda volunteer program.
Day 02: Volunteers will go around the Chengdu city with the guide and explore the various destinations including Jinsha Site Museum. You will then go to the Giant Panda Breeding Center where you will take part in Giant Panda Science Education Activities and learn about the giant pandas and rescue activities.
Day 03: You will visit the Puzhao Temple with your guide and learn about the culture. You will then start the Get-to-know Panda tour at the Dujiangyan Panda Base in Qingcheng County learning more about Pandas, their behavior and habitat. You will check in a hostel in Dujiangyan for overnight stay.
Day 04-Day 06: You will be volunteering at the Dujiangyan Panda Base (with certificate). Day-to-day activities with Panda volunteer program in China includes honorary keeping, planting and moving bamboos, cleaning pens, feeding pandas, taking a panda nutrition course, documenting panda behavior and analysis of panda feces. You will also be helping make intelligent toys for the Pandas to play with.
Day 07: Volunteers for 1 week China Panda Volunteer will bid farewell to the program / Volunteers for 2 or 3 weeks will travel to your next program destination.
Week 2
Day 08: You will climb Mount Qingcheng with an experienced guide. You will learn about Taoism during this visit.
Day 09: You will embark on a tour to learn about the history and culture of China. You will visit historical sites of Anren Ancient Town and Dujiangyan Irrigation Site.
Day 10: You will enjoy at the earthquake museum after which you will be transferred to Wolong and checked in a hostel for overnight and rest for Panda sanctuary China volunteer work the next day.
Day 11-13: These two days, you will explore the Panda habitat in the Wolong nature reserve. You will help with protection of Giant pandas. You will conduct research work, hike and camp in the habitat for the night. The next day, you will travel back to Chengdu city and check in at partner hotel for overnight stay.
Day 14: Volunteers for 2 weeks China Panda Volunteer will bid farewell to the program / Volunteers for 3 weeks will travel to your next program destination
Week 3
Day 15: Today, you will be taken to the Wolong Nature Reserve and in the Wolong Guan Village where you will learn about country life near panda habitat.
Day 16-Day 17: Today, China Panda volunteers will work at Wolong Panda Base (with certificate) under the guidance of local staffs. Your responsibilities includes the following: cleaning enclosures, feeding pandas, Panda behavior observation and making nutritious food for pandas. You will eat your lunch with the Panda keepers and watch documentaries on pandas.
Day 18: You will explore Sanxingdui Museum and learn about Bronze Age and Ancient Shu culture in Guanghan County. You will be transferred back to Chengdu city and checked in to our partner hotel.
Day 19: You will experience traditional Chinese Movable Type during your visit to Zhuge Liang Memorial Hall.
Day 20: You will visit famous landmarks in Chengdu such as Broad and Narrow Velley, Jinli and Wenshu Yuan Monastery and observe the day to day life of the locals.
Day 21: Volunteers will bid farewell to the China Panda Volunteer Program.
Skills and Qualifications
No specific skills or qualifications are required to join panda sanctuary China volunteer other than having Basic English or Chinese language skills. However you should be kind, loving and passionate about working with animals.
The age limit to join this program is 12-60 years. Guardians should accompany all minors under 18 years. Volunteers must also provide a physical examination record taken within 3 months prior to your arrival date.
Volunteer's Schedule & Responsibility
Volunteer duties may vary from day to day and volunteers in the China Panda Volunteer Program must be patient and flexible. Please be advised that you are expected to work between six to eight hours per day. Volunteers will work under the guidelines provided by the local staffs, and we ask that you maintain a ‘no hands-on contact’ rule with pandas unless you have permission.

Our Fees
Global Crossroad is committed to offering quality volunteering programs at the most affordable rates. Our China Panda volunteer program registration fee cost is $299. The registration fee covers the cost of advertising, program promotion, and office expenses.
In addition to the registration fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee directly to the country coordinator which covers project contribution, accommodation, meals, tour activities and field support. The program fee is as follows:

How your fee is allocated?
Program fees cover:

Accommodation and Meal
During your time doing volunteer work in China, you will stay in a shared room in a Hotel or Hostel. Volunteers will share a room with other volunteers of the same gender. We ensure that you will be provided with clean, safe and comfortable rooms. You also have the option to upgrade your accommodation to a private room at additional cost.
China Panda volunteers will receive three meals per day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) of local home cooked traditional Chinese cuisine and sandwiches.
Safety and In Country Support
Your safety is GCR’s first priority. We ensure safety of all our China panda volunteers by carefully connecting you with our in-country coordinators and local field staff. Additionally, GCR provides in-country support to volunteers throughout their stay. This begins from the time you arrive at the airport and includes a detailed orientation. Your in-country coordinator will be available, should you need help with anything you need during your stay in China.
China Panda Volunteer: FAQs
Arrival and Departure
To participate in panda volunteer China you will be required to arrive at Chengdu Shuangliu Airport between 08:00-24:00 China time, on the first or third Monday of every month. The Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport code is CTU.
Make sure to provide correct flight details to our in-country coordinator so that our local representative can come in time to pick you up from the airport. If you miss your flights or if your flight gets delayed/cancelled, you should notify our country coordinator as soon as possible so that airport pick up time can be changed and our local representative can arrive on time.
However, keep in mind that we do not offer airport drop-off service but our in-country coordinator will be more than happy to assist you in making necessary transportation.
Visa
When you come for volunteering in China panda project you will need a tourist visa. For more information on visa and fees, please get in touch with your local Chinese Embassy.
Vaccination
You have to get specific kinds of vaccinations to be able to volunteer in China panda programs. We advise you to visit the Center for Disease Control's website to learn more about these vaccinations.
These are some of the vaccines that you need to take before setting out to China: Rabies, Hepatitis B, Japanese Encephalitis and Meningococcal Meningitis, Yellow Fever, Malaria.
