High Blood Pressure and diseases related to this have become a silent killer among most people in Ghana in recent times, becoming the second highest killer after malaria. People residing in rural areas are most affected due to illiteracy, poverty and lack of sufficient healthcare. This is where your help comes in. You will join as a mobile nurse and actively participate in creating awareness against these diseases.

You will actively visit selected rural villages and offer health services for a minimum of two weeks. The mobile nurse volunteers work in collaboration with at least one Ghanaian health workers who are well informed about the selected village of operation.

Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts

The Mobile Nurse Program is the summarized name for different outreach programs that have been put in place to combat trending sicknesses and diseases. These diseases are the major cause of death amongst the Ghanaians in recent days. This program has been put together as the first line of defense against diseases that occur due to illiteracy, poverty, and lack of adequate healthcare facilities.

When you join this volunteer program in Ghana, your will visit various rural villages and offer needed health services becoming a front-line health worker. You will avert needless death by getting to these people’s homes and screening them for free, giving emergency interventions where necessary, and immediately referring critical cases to the nearest hospital. Your roles and responsibilities include:

  • Door to door visits
  • Checking the blood pressure in each household and documenting
  • Repeating the process every other day for 3 times and giving a recommendation
  • Referring patients with high blood pressure to the nearest hospital
  • Performing basic first aid activities such as cleaning and dressing sores
  • Educating members of each household on the dangers of high blood pressure, hygiene, water and sanitation, washing of hands, family planning, malaria, sexual and reproductive health, oral hygiene
  • Distributing condoms, treated mosquito nets, worm expellers, toothbrushes, toothpastes etc.

Prohibitions for Volunteers:

  • Go into the community without an interpreter.
  • Prescribe Drugs for patients to use in the absence of a qualified doctor.
  • Give any kind of drug to patients apart from vitamins supplements, worm expellers, insect repellents.
  • Give injections of any kind to patients.
  • Undertake any kind of surgical procedure or midwifery procedures.
  • First Aid procedures can be undertaken in order to sustain the patient on his travel to the hospital.
  • Any issues discovered by the nurse should be referred to the General Hospital for attention.

Skills and Qualifications

We highly encourage volunteers with background in healthcare and medical to participate in this program. However, volunteers with no health experience can still participate in the program and can as AIDES to help the mobile nurse in documenting and distributing medications. Other skills and qualifications needed are:

  • Public Health Knowledge.
  • Basic Health Care Knowledge.
  • Accurate Knowledge on Blood Pressure Readings
  • Knowledge in the use of the Blood Pressure Machine, Thermometer and Stethoscope.
  • Ability to perform basic first aid procedures eg wound cleaning and wound dressing.
  • Knowledge on health, water and sanitation and hygiene
  • Must be willing to work in the rural areas among the poor and lower social class.

Volunteers should bring the following medical equipment themselves:

  • Blood Pressure Machine
  • Thermometer
  • Stethoscope
  • First Aid Kit: Hand sanitizers, methylated spirit, gauze, bandages, plasters etch
  • Chocolates and candies for the little children

While working in this mobi-nurse volunteer program in Ghana, every day will be full of fun and excitement and present you with lots of opportunities to get to know and interact with local people who are incredibly friendly and will welcome you with open arms.

First Day: On your first day of volunteering in Ghana, you will be escorted to your placement by a local coordinator and introduced to the local mobile nurses and staffs you’ll be working with. During this day you’ll get to know what your precise duties will be while volunteering.

Weekdays: Your work as a volunteer begins on the second day of the project, and while your exact tasks will vary from day to day, a typical day will follow this outline:

6.00 to 7.30 AM: Early in the morning you will greet the day with a delicious home-cooked breakfast together with your host family and fellow guests.

7.45 AM: Once you’ve enjoyed breakfast and some lovely conversation with your hosts, it’s time to head to your placement for a rewarding day of nursing work.

12.00 PM: Around noon you’ll have a lunch break, and this is the time to rest and a chance to get to know the rest of the medical and nursing staff better.

3.00 PM: After a full day of volunteering, work usually ends around this time and the rest of your day is your free time that you can spend as you wish, exploring the local area, spending time with your colleagues or heading back home to your host family.

6.45 PM : At the end of the day you can settle in with your host family in their cozy home and enjoy a delicious home-cooked dinner, learning more about their customs in the process.


Medical Volunteer Ghana: Dates and Fees

All volunteer programs in Ghana start every Monday of each month. However, if there is travel constrains, you can start any project on any day.

Global Crossroad's volunteer program in Ghana application and registration fee cost US $299. The application fee covers the cost of advertising, program promotion, and office expenses (rent, utilities, and staff salaries in USA office).

In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee. You will pay your weekly fee directly to the country coordinator, who in turn will allocate it to your host family, project and other in-country support we offer to our volunteers. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

The volunteer trip in Ghana program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the program (usually the first or third Monday of the month) to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your program’s last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses, which would typically be around $30 a day for room and meals at a hostel.

Medical Volunteer Ghana: FAQs

Arrival and departure

You’ll have to fly into Kotoka International Airport in Accra for our medical Ghana volunteer work program. You should provide proper flight details to our in-country coordinator before boarding the flight to Ghana, to ensure that our local staffs can arrange airport pickup on time.

Ensure you send us your complete final flight information once your ticket processing is completed. GCR offers airport pick-up services to international volunteers. For our local representative to get to the airport on time, you must provide correct flight details. Any last-minute flight changes must be communicated immediately.

Kindly be informed that Global Crossroad does not provide drop off services after the completion of medical volunteer projects but your in-country coordinator will assist you to arrange for transportation to the airport.

Visa

Anyone planning to work in our medical volunteering project in Ghana must obtain a tourist visa from the embassy of Ghana prior to their departure. Depending on your nationality, on arrival visa is available in Ghana. Also, you can extend Ghanaian visa by visiting the immigration office. Vaccination

To volunteer in Ghana, vaccinations for diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, malaria, yellow fever, measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), rabies, typhoid, hepatitis A, meningitis (Meningococcal disease), hepatitis B, polio vaccine, varicella (chickenpox) are necessary.
