Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts

WWhen you join volunteer teaching English program in India, you will teach English to students between the ages of 6 and 16. You are generally provided with a fixed-curriculum English book and are supported by local English teachers. You will often be asked by school authorities to develop additional projects to help students learn English. If you have other skills, such as computer or art knowledge, you may be asked to teach these other subjects.

Beyond teaching young students, there are varieties of English teaching opportunities in non-profit schools built to help struggling adult citizens. In these settings, your knowledge will benefit your students immeasurably as you get to experience unforgettable snippets of Indian life and culture.

Skills and Qualifications

There are no specific qualifications needed to join our volunteer teaching English opportunity in India beyond a fluency in English. Your understanding of Indian culture and Hindi language can be strengthened by enrolling in our one-week Language & Cultural Immersion program.

You do not need to be a native English speaker, but should have strong English fluency, both written and verbal. In addition no previous teaching experience is required, however you should have a love for teaching, English and conversation, including being enthusiastic, reliable, flexible, patient, and a positive role models for students.

Maximum volunteer age is 65 years.


While in India, we can guarantee you that everyday will be fun, exciting with new experiences. You’ll have a great chance everyday to share your love, skills and passion with children to make their lives better.

In India, you will work with different schools and each one has its own needs, tasks and program, there is no fixed schedule or exact daily itinerary. Be ready to help at all times in many exciting tasks and activities.

  • First Day: - On your first day of English teaching volunteer program in India you will be taken to the school by a local coordinator and introduced to the teaching staff you will be working with. You will have the rest of the day to familiarize yourself with the country, safety and rules and regulations of the project.
  • Weekdays: - A typical daily schedule would be as follows:
  • 7.30 AM – Your will wake up energized for a new day and share a delicious local Indian breakfast with your host family.
  • 8.30 AM – After breakfast you will set to leave for the school for a day full of fun and new activities ranging from teaching to administrative duties and extra curriculum activities
  • 1.30 PM – At noon lunch is usually served. You can enjoy the meal with the children or staff at the school or choose to return back to your host family for a delicious meal.
  • 2.00 PM - 4.00 PM – Your work usually ends at this time. You can now spend your free time exploring exotic surroundings of the community and market place shopping or sightseeing.
  • 7.00 PM - 9.00 PM– After a long fun and exciting day you will settle down for dinner. This will be an opportunity to learn more about India, the people, cuisine and rich traditions and culture

Global Crossroad's volunteer program in India application and registration fee cost US $299. The application fee covers the cost of advertising, program promotion, and office expenses (rent, utilities, and staff salaries in USA office).

In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee. You will pay your weekly fee directly to your host family and project. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

How your fee is allocated?

The India volunteer experience program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the program (usually the first or third Monday of the month) to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your program’s last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses, which would typically be around $30 a day for room and meals at a hostel.


Accommodation and Meal

In India be ready for your home away from home. GCR will provide for your accommodation with a local Indian host family. The family lives in very comfortable, safe and clean home in a serene neighborhood offering you a secure living space. The house is homely offering you great comfort with modern facilities including running hot and cold water, free WIFI and western-style toilets. In addition, you will be served three delicious local meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) per day.

Free Time and Weekend Exploration

There will be enough time to tour and explore while volunteering in teaching English project in India. Every day you will work for 4-5 hours, from Monday to Friday, leaving you plenty of time during the week to check local places around you to experience diverse culture and to visit the market places. Over the weekend you will be able to travel far across the country exploring the Taj Mahal or even hiking the Himalaya Mountains.

Safety and In Country Support

Your safety is our priority. GCR will ensure your safety by carefully vetting the India teaching volunteering projects and accommodation and keeping you well connected with in-country coordinators and local field staff.  Additionally, you will have local support throughout your stay in India. This begins from the time you arrive at the airport and includes a detailed orientation process.

Volunteer Teaching In India: FAQs

Arrival and Departure

You have to fly into Indira Gandi International Airportfor GCR’s teaching English volunteer English teaching program in India. Before boarding your flight to India, do inform the local country coordinator about your arrival and departure time so that airport pickup can be arranged on time.

It is very important to notify the local airport representative about flight delays and missed flights as soon as possible. Also, you are highly advised to come to India one day before the start date of your volunteer project. But we don’t offer airport transfer facilities once the project is completed.

Visa

A tourist visa is needed to work in our Teach English volunteer project in India. You can visit the official embassy or consulate of India in your home country and fill up a visa application form few weeks before your trip to India.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations for Varicella, Tetanus, Typhoid, Oral polio, Japanese encephalitis, Adult diphtheria, Yellow fever (YF), Rabies, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Meningococcal are necessary

How old are the pupils?

In volunteer English teaching program in India, Classes are mixed and you will be working with the age group that you will feel most comfortable teaching. Pupils rage in age from 5-16 years old.

How many pupils are there in one class? How many are there in a school?

This depends on the specific placement. You will have classes ranging from between 15-30 students. In a school there can be between 40 and 150 students.

What will I be teaching?

You will mainly assist local teachers to teach English. However, you can also teach on your own other subjects you are good at. You can teach mathematics, geography and much more.

Could you please provide teaching ideas and tips?

Don’t be scared to come out of your comfort zone even if you are teaching or travelling to India 1st time. Just be calm and embrace the Indian cultures. As the students are not so good at English, please speak slowly to make them understand.
