Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts
As a volunteer teaching English in Kenya, your days will be filled with exciting experiences and tasks. Everyday will be a chance to share your love, and skills to children to impact real change in Kenyan schools and their lives.
You will be able to work in formal or informal teaching locations. In schools, you can also teach math, science, or any other subject that might be of interest. Additionally, you will assist local teachers by encouraging them to use English to interact, thus also developing their conversational skills. You will have various roles during your volunteering opportunity to teach English in Kenya, all of which will be incredibly beneficial to the students whom you work with. Some of your daily activities might include:
- Teaching conversational English, math, or science

Skills and Qualifications
No specific qualifications or skills are needed to join our Kenya volunteer teaching English opportunity beyond a fluency in English. No previous teaching experience is required in order to join an English teaching program in Kenya. You should have a love for teaching, English, and conversation. You should be enthusiastic, reliable, flexible, and patient and be positive role models for students.
When you are volunteering in teaching English program in Kenya, your day will be fun, exciting and memorable. There will be so many opportunities to learn and share something new everyday. Each day you will be teaching and supporting children learn English from a native speaker. There is no fixed schedule, as each day will bring you a new, fun and fulfilling experience.
Here is a sample daily schedule
First Day: On your first day of volunteering in Kenya in teaching English program, you will be accompanied to your placement by a local coordinator and introduced to the local staff and the children you will be working with. During the day you will learn more about country, safety, project, rules and regulations of the project.
- Weekdays: A typical volunteer day is as follows:
- 7.00 to 7.30 AM: You will share a delicious local Kenyan breakfast with your host family.
- 7.45 AM: After the lovely breakfast you will set out for a fun-filled day at the school. Here you will spend time teaching the children and supporting local staff as well as creating fun activities for the kids.
- 12.00 PM: Around noon you will break for lunch, which you’ll enjoy together with the rest of the staff and the kids.
- 3.00 PM: You typically conclude around this time, and you are free to return to your host family, or head into town for some shopping, sightseeing and relaxation.
- 6.45 PM: At the end of the day you can return to your host family for a wonderful family dinner, giving you the opportunity for some deep cultural immersion as you learn about their culture and way of life.

All volunteer programs in Kenya start every Monday of each month. However, if there is travel constrains, you can start any project on any day.
Teaching Volunteer Kenya Program is not available from 5th November to 6th January.

Global Crossroad's volunteer abroad in Kenya application and registration fee cost US $299. In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee. You will pay your weekly fee directly to the country coordinator, who in turn will allocate it to your host family, project and other in-country support we offer to our volunteers. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

Program fees exclude:
- Visas

The program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the pro-gram to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the volun-teer abroad in Kenya program or you decide you stay beyond your program’s last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses
Accommodation and Meal
While volunteering in teaching English program in Kenya a local family will accommodate you. They will provide you with comfortable home with facilities including running water, electricity, and a western-style toilet. You will receive three meals per day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) of traditional Kenyan cuisine.
All our host families have extensive experience hosting volunteers and do their utmost to ensure that their home feels safe and welcoming to you.

Free Time and Weekend Exploration
While volunteering in Kenya in English teaching program, you will only work for 4-5 hours a day, therefore there will be plenty of time and opportunity to tour the surrounding communities and attractions. Additionally, you’ll have Saturday and Sunday to travel around the country, and go on longer tours and excursions.

Safety and In Country Support
Your safety is our first priority, we ensure the safety of all volunteers by carefully vetting host families, keeping them connected with in-country coordinators and local field staff.
Additionally, GCR provides in-country support to volunteers throughout their stay. This begins from the time you arrive at the airport and includes a detailed orientation, and through your host family.

Teaching Volunteer Kenya: FAQs
Arrival and departure
You should fly into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for our Teach English volunteer program in Kenya. Make sure to provide correct flight details to our in-country coordinator so that our local representative can come in time to pick you up from the airport.
If you miss your flights or if your flight gets delayed/cancelled, you should notify our country coordinator as soon as possible so that airport pick up time can be changed and our local representative can arrive on time.
We advise our volunteers to come to Kenya one day before the start date of their volunteer projects.
However, keep in mind that we do not offer airport drop-off service but our in-country coordinator will be more than happy to assist you in making necessary transportation.
Visa
A valid tourist visa from the Kenyan Immigration Department is needed to enter in Kenya as a volunteer. So, we suggest you to get a visa by visiting the embassy or consulate of Kenya in your home country before arriving in Kenya for our projects. Vaccination
The most recommended vaccines for Kenya are Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Pneumonia, Polio, Chickenpox, Typhoid, TDAP (Tetanus, Diphtheria & Pertussis), Meningitis, Measles Mumps Rubella (MMR), Shingles, Yellow Fever, Rabies, Influenza, and Cholera.
