Volunteers’ Responsibilities & Impact
Volunteers participating in the Wildlife Conservation program in Namibia will play a crucial role in conserving, rehabilitating, and researching African wildlife. The sanctuary serves as a refuge for orphaned, injured, or conflict-affected wildlife, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, and various other species. Volunteers will actively contribute to the care of these animals, assisting in rehabilitation efforts and the development of the sanctuary.
This hands-on experience provides a unique opportunity to work closely with African wildlife, gaining insights into their behaviors and care requirements. To ensure a thorough understanding of the project's scope, volunteers are encouraged to commit to at least three weeks on-site, participating in a variety of activities organized on a rotational basis.
At the research sites, volunteers will participate in anti-poaching efforts and reside in close proximity to wild animals in the Namibian bush. Immersed in the natural environment, volunteers will have the unparalleled experience of observing and learning about the behaviors and characteristics of animals such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs.
Accompanied by like-minded individuals passionate about animal welfare, volunteers will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and appreciation of wildlife conservation. This immersive experience provides a unique opportunity to learn firsthand about animal behavior and conservation practices in the African wilderness.
Volunteers will engage in various tasks aimed at wildlife care and conservation, including food preparation and feeding of small animals and carnivores, as well as providing intensive care for juvenile wildlife. Additionally, volunteers will participate in project work such as building camps, maintaining facilities, and assisting with various sanctuary projects.
Monitoring of high-profile species on the reserve, spoor tracking of reserve animals, and focused research activities like analyzing camera traps and GPS data will also be part of the volunteer experience. Other activities include game counts on horseback, attending conflict calls if needed, wildlife tracking, maintaining camera traps, hiking, environmental rehabilitation efforts such as wire braiding, and participation in research presentations.
Skills and Qualifications
No specific skills or qualifications are necessary to participate in the wildlife conservation volunteer program in Namibia. We simply require volunteers to have a passion for working with animals and an interest in wildlife conservation. While individuals with animal work or veterinary experience may be able to offer additional assistance in certain areas, there are opportunities for everyone to make a positive impact on the lives of the animals. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to join the program.

Global Crossroad's volunteer abroad in Namibia application and registration fee cost US $299. In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee. You will pay your weekly fee directly to the country coordinator, who in turn will allocate it to your host family, project and other in-country support we offer to our volunteers. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

The program fees will cover expenses from the first day of the program to the last. If you arrive before the program starts or decide to stay beyond its end date, you'll need to cover yourself any additional expenses incurred during that time.
Accommodation and Meal
Global Crossroad ensures that volunteers in Namibia have safe, hygienic, and comfortable lodging options, along with appropriate meal choices. At the Wildlife Sanctuary, volunteers stay in shared tents equipped with beds and bedding, and have access to communal shower and toilet facilities powered by solar energy. Common areas have electrical outlets available. Volunteers are provided with three meals daily, which can accommodate various dietary requirements, and they can utilize amenities such as laundry service, swimming pool, and gym facilities.
A bar/shop is available, offering snacks, beverages, and essential items, including complimentary Wi-Fi and cell phone credit. In Kanaan and Harnas, volunteers are housed in shared rooms with provided linens and towels. Volunteers will also have access to laundry service, a swimming pool, and a bar/shop. Solar power is used for electricity at Harnas, with some limitations on high-energy devices.

Upon your arrival at Windhoek Hosea Kutako Airport (WHK) in Namibia, a representative from Global Crossroad will be waiting to welcome you and provide assistance. To ensure a seamless pick-up process, please ensure that you provide us with accurate flight details ahead of time. If there are any unexpected flight delays or missed connections, please notify us promptly so that we can make alternative arrangements for your pick-up. Please be aware that our services do not include airport departure assistance once your project duration has concluded.
Visa
To volunteer in Namibia, acquiring a tourist visa is necessary unless you are from a visa-exempt country. The specific requirements and application process for obtaining a tourist visa can vary based on your nationality. It's essential to consult the nearest Namibian embassy or consulate to obtain the most up-to-date information on visa requirements and application procedures.
Vaccination
To work in our Namibia volunteering program, you will need some vaccination. The National Travel Health Network and Centre and WHO recommend the following vaccinations: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, cholera, yellow fever, rabies and tetanus.
