Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts
When you take a volunteer trip teaching English in Nepal, you will teach 3 to 4 hours each day, five-six days a week. Most of the students range in age from 6 to 13. In Nepal, each school has its own on staff English teacher who will assist you with teaching methods, offer advice on solving communication barriers, and provide suitable curricula for the classrooms. Depending up on your experience, you will work as assistant to local teacher or as a main teacher
You do not have to be a native English speaker. Anyone fluent in English can teach in Nepal. The schools in Nepal are closed during the holidays and exam periods. During these times, Global Crossroad will organize alternative tasks for you, such as assisting in our orphanage program (if necessary).
Volunteer teaching English in Nepal is a very meaningful project. Your work will allow you to actively teach and share ideas, create an interactive environment for learning. Additionally, this will give you a chance to work alongside local teachers to improve their existing level of English and create a better future for the children. Your will support children that will pass the skills to others and eventually reach many other children even future generation.
Skills and Qualifications
There are no specific qualifications needed to join our volunteering teaching English in Nepal projects beyond a fluency in English. However, insight into Nepalese language and culture is valuable when volunteering teaching English in Nepal and you should consider enrolling in our one-week language studies and cultural immersion program.
You should have strong English fluency, both written and verbal, yet no previous teaching experience is required. You should also have a love for teaching. When you sign up for a volunteer opportunity teaching English in Nepal, you should be enthusiastic, reliable, flexible, patient, and strive to be good role models for the children.
While working as a volunteer, your days will be joyful, positive and exciting. Everyday you will be able to share your love and passion for teaching children and make a positive impact in their lives.
In Nepal you can choose to work with schools, institutions and orphanages and they all have different needs, programs and schedule, so there is not such a fixed daily schedule as tasks vary every day. Just be open to take on as many tasks as you can.
- First Day: On your first day of teaching English volunteering in Nepal Program you will be accompanied by a local coordinator to the school and introduced to the local staff. The rest of the day you will get to familiarize yourself with the duties, facilities and the children.
- Weekdays: - A typical volunteer will be something like this:
- 7.00 AM - 7.30 AM – The day will start early and bright, you will share a delicious local Nepalese breakfast with your host family.
- 9.30 AM – You will set to you head out to for a full day of fun activities. Like teaching, and administrative work.
- 10.00 AM - 4.00 PM – You will teach several (4-5) 45 minute classes. You will mainly be teaching English, however, you may also have the opportunity to teach other subjects. Please take note that the school day begins with a prayer.
- 12.00 PM – You have your lunch break, around noon; you can choose share a meal with the children or with your fellow teachers as your exchange culture and traditions.
- 4.00 PM – Work usually ends around this time and you are free to travel back home or spend your time exploring the local area.
- 7.00 PM – After a long day full of fun activities and experiences, dinner will be served; you will enjoy sumptuous traditional meals with your host family as they share Nepali culture with you.

The volunteer trip to Nepal program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the program (usually the first or third Monday of the month) to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your programs last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses.
Accommodation and Meal
While volunteering in Nepal teaching English program, you will be hosted by local family. This family is properly vetted and they are highly respected in the community. The family is welcoming and ready to love and respect you as well as provide you with a secure comfortable home featuring running water, electricity and western-style toilets. They will also provide you with three local meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) per day.
Free Time and Weekend Exploration
There will be enough time for you to spend explore Nepal. You will have plenty of free time every day after work since you only work for about 4 to 5 hours per day Monday through Friday. Over the weekend this will be the time to travel to the rest of the country to explore the amazing scenery and experience the Nepali vast culture and architecture.

Additionally, you will be assigned to an in-country coordinator who will be available to help you if you need anything. Volunteer Teaching in Nepal: FAQS
Arrival and Departure
To join teaching English volunteer project in Nepal you must fly into Tribhuvan International Airport, one day before the start of the project. Notify us immediately if you miss your flight or the flight you’re scheduled for gets delayed.
An airport pick-up service will be available for you hen you land in Nepal. A local representative will be waiting for you at the international airport. However, we do not provide airport transfer services at the end of your volunteer services but your in-country coordinator will be happy to advice you the best way to get to the airport.
Visa
Without a tourist visa, you will not be allowed entry into Nepal. You should apply for tourist visa by visiting the official embassy of Nepal in your home country before the start of your volunteering teaching English program in Nepal.
You can also get on arrival visa in the airport. It will cost you US$25 for a 15-day single entry visa. But citizens of countries like the USA, UK, Canada and Australia are eligible for on arrival visa. You can stay in Nepal for a total of 150 days within a calendar year.
You can even extend your Nepalese tourist visa and work in our volunteer teaching English project in Nepal. If your stay in Nepal will be more than 90 days in total, visit the office of Immigration Department in either Pokhara or Kathmandu for visa extension.

Vaccinations
For a week-long visit to Nepal, the CDC and WHO recommend vaccinations for Malaria, MMR, Hepatitis A, chickenpox, Japanese Encephalitis, Yellow Fever, Polio, Typhoid, and Rabies, and Hepatitis B.

What is the name of the school?
Several school are included in our volunteer abroad teaching English in Nepal program. All details will be provided upon the completion of your application process.
How many pupils are there in a class? How many pupils does a school in Nepal have?
The size of the schools in Nepal varies. Normally, a class might have 20-30 pupils. The school may range between 250-500 children.
Are there specific details that I should know?
It is highly recommended that you be extremely patience given the basic level of English spoken in Nepal. Sometimes you might find the school system in Nepal a bit unusual or too permissive. However, working in Nepal with children will be very rewarding.
