Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts

Your responsibilities during the project will depend entirely on your experience level and the current needs of your project placement. You will mostly be assisting and shadowing local doctors and medical professionals and learn from them by helping them with various medical tasks. Administrative work such as keeping patient records and recording patient information will also be part of your workload.

Through your medical volunteering project in Thailand, you will gain huge amounts of invaluable medical experience that will greatly benefit you academically and in your career going forward. You will also be providing important assistance to overworked local doctors, allowing them to reach a greater number of patients and improve the overall health of the community.


Skills and Qualifications

To participate in this Thailand medical volunteering work, you need to have some sort of background in the medical feed. Whether you are about to enter medical school, already a medical student or educated as a doctor, nurse, therapist or any other medical job, there is important work for you to do here. Surin Medical Project: (sample one week)

Day 1 – Arrival

On your arrival in Bangkok you will be met by your guide and brought to your accommodation in Khao San road. Here you’ll get to relax and refresh yourself before going out for a night of fun with your new traveler and volunteer friends.

Day 2 – Tour of Bangkok

The second day of your Thailand medical volunteering program consists of an orientation and a tour of the capital city. You will be shown all the most important sights and landmarks of the city, serving as a great introduction to the wonderful country you’re about to volunteer in.

Day 3- Travel to Surin

The train ride to Surin takes place on the third day, and this is an experience all of itself. The journey lasts for roughly 8 hours and will take you through amazing scenery and charming rural villages. Once you’re in Surin the rest of the day is reserved for a well-deserved rest before you begin your volunteer work.

Day 4 to 7 – Medical Work

Finally, it’s time to gain valuable medical experience and make a difference in the lives of the local people. You will spend your days from 8am to 3pm working in your Thailand medical volunteering program placement, and then have the rest of the day as free time.

Day 8 – Free Time

On day 8 it is the end of the project for participants who are only with us for a single week.

Local Team & Daily Support

Our programs in Surin are highly coordinated and you will be accompanied by a local guide at all times to act as a coordinator and translator. Each morning you will be picked up together with your fellow volunteers and your guide and driven to your placement by pick-up. The drive will go through beautiful scenery and charming villages before arriving at your destination.

Chiang Mai Group Medical Project: (sample one week)

Day 1 – Arrive Chiang Mai International Airport

You will be met by our local guide at Chiang Mai International Airport and taken by private transport to their hotel in Chiang Mai city. After time to relax and unpack your group will meet in reception for an orientation with your guide. The guide will talk to you about Thailand, Chiang Mai area and your one-week medical experience. After your talk time for walk around Chiang Mai City and your guide will recommend places for dinner.

Day 2 -Morning Tour and Afternoon Transfer to Project Location

This morning you will be taken on a walking tour of Chiang Mai, explore the local temples, shops, and street sellers. In the afternoon you will be driven to Mae Wang district 1h20mins outside, the location for your medical experience.

Hotel: Guest House, twin rooms, aircon and private bathroom

Day 3-7, Medical Experience

For the next 5 days you will be supporting the work for the local healthcare professionals at one or more of the Government funded rural health clinics. Your guide will accompany you and act as your translator. These are walk in clinics for the people living in the surrounding villages. You will learn firsthand the challenges faced by the local healthcare team, support the local community using your medical skills and learn about rural Thai life in Thailand.

Day 8 – Free Day

You’ll have the day off to explore Chiang Mai and relax. If you only signed up for 1 week, this will be the end of the project for you and our staff will assist you with organizing onwards travel.

If you’re staying longer, you’ll be back to work on Monday, and the following weeks will include work from Monday to Thursday and three full days to unwind and relax from Friday to Sunday.

Global Crossroad's volunteer program in Thailand application and registration fee cost US $299. The application fee covers the cost of advertising, program promotion, and office expenses (rent, utilities, and staff salaries in USA office).

In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee . You will pay your weekly fee directly to the country coordinator, who in turn will allocate it to your host family, project and other in-country support we offer to our volunteers. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

The program fee needs to be paid in GBP to directly to the country coordinator before the project start date.

Accommodation and Meal

While doing your medical volunteer work in Thailand, you will stay in our safe and comfortable volunteer house. You will share a room with comfy beds and modern bathroom facilities with volunteers of the same gender, and all required facilities are located nearby. There are no meals provided, but a kitchen is available for your use and there are countless options for food near the volunteer house.

Free Time and Weekend Exploration

You will have plenty of free time to travel and enjoy Thailand during your project. Your work during the week generally ends at around 3pm, giving you the evenings to spend as you wish. During the weekends you have three full days to travel further afield throughout Thailand and even to neighboring Cambodia.

Arrival and Departure

You need to fly into Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Bangkok for to participate in this medical experience in Thailand. Inform us of your flight schedule beforehand and we will arrange for your pickup at the airport. Should your flight be cancelled or missed, please inform us and we will arrange a new pickup accordingly.

Be aware that you need to arrange your own transport back to the airport on completion of your Thailand medical volunteer experience, but your guide will be more than happy to help you book this.

Visa
